Computer A Review

You are familiar with some simple computer terms. Let us whatever we have learnt in the earlier class.

USES OF COMPUTERS

Computers are used for doing calculation, playing music and games, typing documents, drawing pictures,

Storing data, etc.

Nowadays computers are seen everywhere-in banks, hospitals, offices, supermarkets, schools,

Railway reservation counters, etc.

WHAT IS A COMPUTER

A computer is a machine, which can understand only electric signals. It provides us with output based on the data we feed in.

Data is entered into the computer through the keyboard and is stored in the memory device. The CPU for calculations or comparisons then processes it and the result is displayed on the monitor.

Keyboard is an input device and the monitor is an output device.

KEYBOARD

It looks like a typewriter. It has numerous keys.

(a)           Alphabet or Letter keys: A to Z

(b)          Number keys: 0 to 9

(c)           Symbol keys:  + - * / $ #! @ % & ()=? < > {}[] \

(d)          Special keys:  Enter, Shift, Alt, Ctrl, Tab, Insert,

Delete, Page up, Page down, Home,

Caps lock, Num lock, Space bar,

                                     Esc, Backspace etc.

(e)           Direction or Cursor keys: (up, down, left, right.)

(f)            Punctuation keys:  .  ;  :   ,

MOUSE

It is an input device used mainly in the Windows environment. It has two or three buttons. Specific functions are carried out by clicking or double clicking the mouse buttons.

HOW TO START A COMPUTER

       Switch on the electric supply.

       Switch on the CPU.

       Switch on the monitor.

Once the computer is switched on, you will see a

Blinker flashing on the screen. It is called the cursor.

It indicates that the computer is ready for work.

WHAT IS WINDOWS

Windows is an operating system that integrates the software and hardware. It is an easy-to-use software, which displays all the commands in the form of a menu.

HOW TO EXECUTE WINDOWS

To execute Windows, do the following:

       Type Win from the keyboard.

       Press the Enter key.

WHAT IS PAINTBRUSH

Paintbrush is a software in Windows used for making drawings. It is available in the Accessories Group. It is used to draw lines, curves and circles. It can be used to make the drawings in different colours and thicknesses.

The drawings can be saved using the Save command given in the File Menu. Paintbrush can be closed by selecting the Exit command from the File Menu.

WHAT IS LOGO

LOGO is one of the simplest and easiest computer languages development especially for children. It can draw, write or do calculations.

LOGO can be executed by typing LOGO from the keyboard. The small triangular arrow seen on the LOGO screen is called the turtle.

You can make drawing in LOGO by moving the turtle on the screen

COMMANDS IN LOGO

The movement of the turtle is controlled by the following commands. All these commands move the turtle head for a given number of units, ie, from 0 to 360.

The RIGHT command rotates the turtle heads in the clockwise direction.

The LEFT command rotates the turtle head in the anti-clock direction.

The SETH command fixes the turtle head in a direction, which is specified by the unit.

The FORWARD of FD command draws a line for a given unit of length in the forward direction.

The BACK or BK command draws a line for a given unit of length in the reverse direction.

The HIDETURTLE or HT command hides the turtle in the drawing.

The SHOWTURTLE or ST command shows the turtle in the drawing.

The PENUP and PENDOWN commands are used to decide weather the FORWORD and BACK commands should make a line or not.

The PENERASE command erases all the lines, which are on the turtles path.

The PRINT command is used to print the text or numbers in LOGO.

Computer can do many jobs. It can Read, Write, Count, Calculate, Compare, Draw and Remember things or data.

You can also do all these things, but the computer can do them quickly, easily and accuratly.

7 Wonders Foundation's seven wonders of the world

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is the first known list of the most remarkable man-made creations of classical antiquity, and was based on guide-books popular among Hellenic sight-seers and only includes works located around the Mediterranean rim. The number seven was chosen because the Greeks believed it to be the representation of perfection and plenty.[1] Many similar lists have been made, including lists for the Medieval World and the Modern World.

In 2001 an initiative was started by the Swiss corporation New7Wonders Foundation to choose the New Seven Wonders of the World from a selection of 200 existing monuments for profit.[11] Twenty-one finalists were announced January 1, 2006.[12] Egypt was not happy with the fact that the only original wonder would have to compete with the likes of the Statue of Liberty, the Sydney Opera House, and other landmarks; and called the project absurd. To solve this, Giza was named an honorary Candidate.[13] The results were announced on July 7, 2007 in Benfica's stadium in a big ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal,[14] and are listed here:
